"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Yesterday's tragic events took place a few blocks from the birthplace of Two Trick Pony — a spot on the Boylston Street sidewalk where Carrie and I met. Boylston is a street we both worked on and so know well, seeing the images of it covered in blood and smoke is beyond words, although nothing compared to what the runners, fans, victims and their families are going through. Our hearts are with all of them and with all victims of violence everywhere.

There is a lot of commentary being posted about yesterday's events, thankfully much of it full of compassion and hope. This article by Zoe Weil struck a particular cord with me. She says, "There is darkness in the world. There is cruelty and meanness and wanton violence and political violence. But they are ultimately small acts in the face of massive goodness – awful as they are when they happen. History shows a consistent and relentless shift toward greater democracy, greater understanding and tolerance, greater acceptance. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” and he was right.

Don’t we see this everywhere: Women voting and going to school; civil rights spreading across the globe; gays and lesbians receiving equal rights in many countries and states; animals receiving protections (albeit still far too limited) unheard of in previous centuries; global outcry against injustice, against exploitation, against environmental destruction?

Are our violent tendencies gone? Of course not. But we are not cheering at the Coliseum as slaves entertain thousands in fights to the death. Instead, we are crying by the millions as our fellow citizens are injured and killed by bombs detonated at a hallmark of our physical achievement: the Boston Marathon."

The full article is here.

We believe, as Zoe does, that humane education is one vital way to foster a society that rejects violence, hate and injustice while spreading compassion for all living beings. We teach our children math, science and reading, all of which are important, but we must also teach compassion, empathy and justice. I know that Carrie will be raising her baby (due to be born any day now!) with these values.

If you feel powerless and that your actions can't possibly effect change, you are mistaken. Every action we take effects us, those around us and in turn the world. Simply showing kindness to ourselves, friends, family and strangers is a good place to start. Teaching kindness to our children will carry the message forward. There will always be times of darkness in the world, but the many acts of kindness that spring from them are what get us through.

Love and peace, Laurie

Help us pick the next Charity Card!

twotrickpony 235

Help a deserving organization and
enter to win a $50 gift certificate!

The Ponies are excited to announce a change (improvement really!) to our Charity Card program. Rather than choosing a new charity everyone month, we will choose one charity to benefit for 6 months. This way, we can make a larger donation to the chosen charity. Since there will be fewer chances for you to win a gift certificate by voting for the Charity Card, we've decided to increase the amount to $50!

STEP 1
Visit the
Two Trick Pony online shop and choose a single card (birthday, greeting, thank you, etc.) to be the next Charity Card.

STEP 2
Leave a comment here or on our Facebook page by Wednesday, January 9th with your choice.

STEP 3
Check back on
January 10th to see if you were chosen at random to win a $50 gift certificate to our online shop!

Thimblism

Thimblism

These upcycled necklaces by Twitch and Whiskers really brought back some memories for me. Like many kids, I collected colorful stickers and erasers but I also had a thimble collection (yes, thimbles!). I completely forgot about it until I saw these beauties in a Craftland e-newsletter.

I haven't seen my collection in years and probably gave it away. I wonder if someone, somewhere has given new life to any of my old thimbles. What do you collect or have memories of collecting?

Finally, a reason to drink beer!

pumpkin keg
When I saw this post over on ManMade DIY, I remembered something special about Fall. It's one of the few times I see beer on the menu and think "yum!" That's right, I'm talking about pumpkin beer with cinnamon & sugar on the rim of the glass. (If you're like me, you prefer your adult beverages to taste like they're meant for a 5 year old).  It's like drinking a fizzy pumpkin pie!

Head over to ManMade DIY for instructions including a how-to-video.

September Charity Card o' the Month!

Holiday Friends card
Thanks to everyone who helped choose the very first "Charity Card o' the Month". Of all the nominated cards, the winning one chosen at random was (drumroll please...) Holiday Friends! It happens to be one of our all time favorite cards and best sellers. Congratulations to Shannon who chose the winning card, she will be receiving a $25 gift certificate to our online shop!

September is a big month for wholesale holiday orders as retail stores stock up for Christmas and other winter holidays. So we are excited to be donating 10% of all sales of our popular "Holiday Friends" card to this month's chosen charity 826 Boston.

twotrickpony 213
826 Boston is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Their services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this understanding in mind, they provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of their free programs seek to strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Check out their website for information on how you can help support their mission!

Strange Attractor at Studio Soto, Boston

Strange Attractor at Studio Soto, Boston
A couple of weeks ago, I trucked down to Boston's Fort Point neighborhood for a performance and installation piece at Studio Soto. I've spent a good bit of time over the last several years at experimental music events, but this was one of the most stimulating in recent memory. A group of artists visiting from Ireland collaborated with several local folks over the period of nearly a month, and created a complete visual and auditory environment to explore. The photo above shows some of my favorite moments. From the top: interior of a dollhouse, filled with light and sound; chair piled high with magnetic tape (l); exterior of the dollhouse (r); bass on the (operating?) table; overhead projector filled with objects (l) creating live collage projected on the wall (r).

Marimekko opens in Boston!

Marimekko opens in Boston!
This weekend, I was lucky enough to head to Boston's Back Bay for a celebration of the opening of a new Marimekko store. The team in Finland created fabric cakes in honor of the new store, and Susan Ward, one of the leading experts on the Finnish design house, gave a talk on Sunday morning about the history of Marimekko and its arrival in the U.S. (thanks to architect Ben Thompson and Design Research in Cambridge). I learned a lot, enjoyed shopping, and even spent a little time lounging on the giant poufs outside. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday!
